Dengue NS1 Antigen Test
The Dengue NS1 test is a blood test used to detect dengue virus infection early.
NS1 stands for Non-Structural Protein 1, a protein produced by the dengue virus soon after infection.
This test is most useful in the first 1–7 days of fever, before antibodies develop.
🦠 What It Detects
NS1 antigen → indicates current dengue infection
Can detect all 4 dengue virus serotypes: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, DEN-4
🧪 How the Test Works
A small blood sample is tested using ELISA or rapid immunochromatographic strip.
Detects NS1 protein released by the virus into the bloodstream.
Provides early diagnosis before IgM antibodies appear.
📊 Interpretation
Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
Positive NS1 | Current dengue infection (early stage) |
Negative NS1 | No NS1 detected; infection may be too early or absent |
⚠️ A negative NS1 does not completely rule out dengue. A repeat test or dengue IgM/IgG test may be needed after 5–7 days of symptoms.
🩺 Symptoms of Dengue Fever
High fever, sudden onset
Severe headache
Pain behind the eyes
Muscle and joint pain (“breakbone fever”)
Rash
Nausea and vomiting
Severe dengue may lead to bleeding, low platelets, or organ involvement.
💡 Key Points
Early detection: NS1 is positive during the first week.
Follow-up tests: IgM and IgG antibodies help confirm infection later.
Rapid test: Can be done in 15–30 minutes.
