Malaria Antigen Test (Rapid Malaria Test)
The Malaria Antigen Test is a rapid blood test used to detect malaria infection.
It identifies specific antigens (proteins) released by malaria parasites in the blood.
Malaria is caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium.
🦠 Common Malaria Parasites Detected
The test usually detects:
Plasmodium falciparum (most severe type)
Plasmodium vivax
Sometimes mixed infections
🧪 How the Test Works
A drop of blood is placed on a test strip.
It detects malaria antigens such as:
HRP2 (Histidine-Rich Protein 2) → specific for P. falciparum
pLDH (parasite lactate dehydrogenase) → detects other species
Results are usually available within 15–20 minutes.
📊 Result Interpretation
Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
Positive for Pf | Infection with P. falciparum |
Positive for Pv | Infection with P. vivax |
Mixed | Both species detected |
Negative | No malaria antigen detected |
⚠️ A negative test does not completely rule out malaria if symptoms are strong — repeat testing or a blood smear may be needed.
🩺 Symptoms of Malaria
High fever with chills
Sweating
Headache
Body aches
Nausea/vomiting
Fatigue
Severe malaria (especially P. falciparum) can cause:
Organ failure
Anemia
Confusion
Seizures
🔬 Comparison with Peripheral Smear
Rapid Antigen Test | Peripheral Blood Smear |
|---|---|
Quick results | Gold standard |
Easy to perform | Shows parasite type and count |
Good for emergency use | Requires microscope & skilled technician |
When Is It Done?
Sudden fever with chills
Travel to malaria-endemic areas
Screening in emergency settings
